Does Cinnamon Help You Lose Weight?
Is there a connection between cinnamon and weight loss? If you're overweight then this is something to consider as many people feel that eating anything that has a flavor or scent can boost weight loss. For the most part, however, this is not true. Cinnamon does have a slight appetite suppressant effect on the body but this may not be enough to lose weight.
Before we look at does cinnamon help you lose weight? Firstly, let's examine what it is that gives food for its nutritional value. When we eat food, the chemical composition of the food breaks down chemically and this creates an energy pathway, also called a metabolic pathway, through which food is processed and nutrients are used up.
When the body senses a change in the amount of glucose in the bloodstream it reacts by making more insulin. So does cinnamon help you lose weight? The short answer is yes and no. You do need to consume cinnamon in your diet. However, the amount of cinnamon required for the benefits to be felt is very small. Less than 1% of the diet consists of cinnamon and this is the key. The other benefits from cinnamon involve the release of neurochemicals within the body which affects the release of hormones and energy.
There are however some conditions which make the consumption of cinnamon in moderation dangerous. The first is diabetes. Diabetes will cause the body to produce too much insulin, which in turn stimulates the pancreas to secrete too much insulin. As a result, the cinnamon can not only get rid of the excess insulin but also the excess sugar in the blood. When the level of the sugar is high, the blood sugar goes through the roof and this often leads to obesity, heart disease and other health issues.
Another condition which causes the risk for weight loss related issues is hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is when the blood sugar levels are low and the body is not able to use glucose. If you have this condition, you will notice that your energy crashes and that you feel tired and sluggish after just a short burst of energy. In addition to this, people who suffer from hypoglycemia often feel extremely hungry. As a result of the lack of food, they end up eating more, which leads to an increase in the level of glucose in the blood stream and thus causing more insulin to be produced which leads to weight gain.
When it comes to cinnamon being effective against diabetes, the answer is it certainly helps! It may not be able to totally cure the condition, but it certainly reduces its effect. It does this by increasing the amount of insulin that the pancreas makes which allows for the proper functioning of the cells. By doing this, it can help decrease the amount of glucose in the blood and thus help maintain blood sugar levels that are appropriate for human growth and development.
One of the most exciting benefits of cinnamon for weight loss is that it has amazing anti-aging properties. Studies have shown that regular consumption of cinnamon can help reduce the formation of harmful free radicals in the body. These are molecules that can cause damage to the cells in the body and lead to disease and even cancer. When these are formed, the cells cannot function as they should. So by ingesting cinnamon on a regular basis, you can help prevent such formation and delay the aging process.
